(via the Japan Society) Tomoko Yoneda (1965– ) Tomoko Yoneda concentrates on suppressed historical and cultural narratives that have helped form the power relations of the present. Kimusa focuses on interior views of a site in Seoul that was the main military hospital during the Japanese colonial period (1910–45) and was then taken over in 1971 by the DSC, a counter-intelligence agency that interrogated, and at times tortured, its own nationals as well as fomenting political unrest. Yoneda’s photographs make no direct reference to these histories, revealing only the spare geometries of the shadows of furniture, shelves, and appliances that used to be housed there.
